Meet the man behind our logo: Dennis Fillip, Technical Staff Associate. Dennis has been employed by The Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory (FSEL) for twenty three years so in a grassroots approach, he designed the logo for CBEI.

We asked him about his design process and this was his response: “After we had discussed the logo, I started hand sketching ideas I had dreamed up; some were very bad on the eyes. I was actually kind of obsessed with designing the logo. I wanted a 3-dimensional logo, but after doing a bit of research I concluded it would be too busy. Information I read said a logo should be very simple and leave a memorable impression. After using paper and pencil I moved to a CAD program (SolidWorks). I probably had over a hundred different attempts before hitting on one that looked workable. Using standard fonts didn’t work well. The lower case CBEI font is custom to the logo. I thought it represented CBEI being less the focus and more about the members involved. The arch started out as a bridge and was simplified. The star at the top apex of the bridge represents the CBEI location being in Austin, the capitol city of Texas. Multiple similar designs were presented to choose from.  We all voted on the one we liked best and after UT approvals, the logo was official in August of 2020.”

Dennis has been a part of CBEI since before it even had a name and has been instrumental in getting CBEI up and running. Thank you, Dennis for your tireless service to CBEI and FSEL!
