Senior Engineering Scientist
Dr. Saqan specializes is in structural engineering, focusing on the analysis and design of reinforced and precast/prestressed concrete structures, as well as the rehabilitation of existing structures using various materials. He is currently a Senior Engineering Scientist at the Concrete Bridge Engineering Institute (CBEI), where he oversees several high-profile research projects funded by both government and private entities at the Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory.
From 2021 to 2023, Dr. Saqan served as a Professor of Practice in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to this, he was a faculty member and the Founding Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering at the American University in Dubai (AUD) from 2006 to 2021.
Dr. Saqan has a wealth of experience in teaching, research, curriculum development, and program assessment and accreditation. He was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship for the academic year 2005-2006, during which he was a Research Scholar at the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette.
An active contributor to his field, Dr. Saqan publishes regularly in highly reputable journals and conferences. He also chaired the Local Organizing Committee for the First Middle East Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment, and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures (SMAR 2011), held at AUD in collaboration with Empa – Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology.
Dr. Saqan is the recipient of multiple research and service awards and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Texas.
